This presentation is designed for general dentists to improve confidence in assessing adult patients who may benefit from orthodontic treatment and recognising when an orthodontic assessment is appropriate.
It will focus on what to look for during a routine dental examination, including periodontal health, dental prognosis, missing or compromised teeth, existing restorations, occlusion, tooth wear and functional concerns. It will also cover red flags and potential contraindications, when dental or periodontal issues should be addressed before referral, and which adult patients are suitable for orthodontic assessment.
Using practical clinical cases, the course will demonstrate when to refer, what information to provide, and how to identify orthodontic opportunities in everyday adult dental practice.
Presenters
Dr Nida Khan
Nida graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science (Class 1 Honours) from The University of Queensland in 2007 before completing her Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics at The University of Adelaide in 2014. Following her specialist training, she was awarded Membership in Orthodontics from both the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Her commitment to excellence has been recognised through a number of academic and clinical awards, including the Australian Postgraduate Award, the Australian Society of Orthodontists (SA) Prize for Best Clinically Treated Case by a Postgraduate Orthodontist, and the Raj Prasad Award for Best Clinical Case in South Australia.
Nida is an active member of the Australian Dental Association, Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the World Federation of Orthodontists. She is also the current State Secretary of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO).
With experience across both public and private practice, Nida has worked in orthodontic practices in the Gold Coast and Perth. She currently practises at Midland Orthodontists and also holds an appointment at the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia. She particularly enjoys combining evidence-based orthodontic care with a practical, patient-centred approach.
Dr Sanjana Baksi
Dr Sanjana Baksi completed her Bachelor of Dental Science (Hons) at the University of Western Australia in 2010 and subsequently worked as a dentist in Perth and Adelaide in a combination of private practice and public dental services. She then undertook orthodontic specialist training at The University of Adelaide from 2016-2018.
During the three-year programme, Dr Baksi has presented at various Dental and Orthodontic meetings. In 2018, she successfully completed the examinations jointly conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons
