Description
This seminar is designed to equip recent dental graduates with the practical knowledge and clinical judgment needed to manage dental extractions and odontogenic infections in general practice safely and effectively.
The session will explore key decision-making principles, focusing on when it is appropriate to proceed with treatment and when referral to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is indicated.
Participants will learn to identify red flags in dental infections, incision and drainage techniques, manage routine and complex extractions safely, and understand their clinical limitations.
The seminar will also provide a structured approach to writing clear, concise, and effective referral letters that facilitate optimal patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Presenters
Dr Frank Chang is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with degrees in both medicine and dentistry. Dr Frank Chang has special interest in the surgical management of temporomandibular joint pathology, disorders and total TMJ replacement and TMJ arthroscopic surgery, facial trauma, orthognathic surgery for dento-facial deformities and airway and sleep surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea, distraction osteogenesis and practices full scopes of practice in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery including dentoalveolar surgery, implantology and oral pathology. Frank works in private practice in South Perth. He also enjoys teaching and is involved in the teaching and training of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery trainees through his appointments at public teaching hospital at Royal Perth Hospital. He is also a senior clinical lecturer at UWA and is also a reviewer for multiple peer reviewed journals.
