A collaborative full-day CPD event presented by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery colleagues delivered in partnership by the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS) and the Australian Dental Association of Western Australia (ADAWA).
Description
Join us for this collaborative full-day CPD event presented by our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery colleagues delivered in partnership by the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS) and the Australian Dental Association of Western Australia (ADAWA).
The day is designed to enhance the GP dentist's understanding of potential challenges in minor oral surgical procedures, streamline treatment approaches, and reduce the risk of complications.
Topics to be covered include;
Surgical Risk and Case Selection: Setting Up for Success
- Explores clinical, anatomical, and patient risk factors determining suitability for in-practice management or OMS referral. Covers assessment frameworks, risk stratification, informed consent, and case selection principles.
Radiographic Red Flags and Anatomical Awareness
- Focuses on identifying high-risk anatomical structures and interpreting imaging accurately. Includes 2D/3D risk recognition and communication of anatomical risks to patients.
Bleeding and Airway Emergencies: Recognition and Control
-Outlines stepwise management of haemorrhage and airway emergencies. Emphasises preparedness, team roles, and escalation to OMS or hospital care.
Oro-Antral Communications and Sinus Involvement
- Reviews prevention and closure of OACs. Discusses closure options, antibiotic use, referral indicators, and sinus management principles.
Nerve Injuries and Instrument Displacement
- Examines mechanisms, recognition, and management of nerve injuries and displaced roots/instruments. Includes medico-legal documentation and OMS referral pathways.
Intraoperative and Post-Extraction Fractures
- Covers risk factors, prevention, and management of alveolar, tuberosity, and mandibular fractures. Includes stabilisation techniques and communication standards.
Implant-Related Complications
- Discusses intra-operative errors, early implant failure, sinus/nerve involvement, and documentation following implant-related mishaps.
Infection, Swelling, and Delayed Healing
- Differentiates normal healing from infection, covering antibiotics, drainage, and airway risk escalation. Provides practical OMS referral indicators.
Escalation and Referral Pathways: Knowing When to Call for Help
-Explains when and how to escalate complex cases, communicate effectively, and coordinate referrals with OMS and hospitals.
Documentation and Record Keeping During Adverse Events
- Details defensible record-keeping practices, including contemporaneous notes, consent updates, and medico-legal standards.
Ethical and Legal Responsibilities After a Complication
- Explores duty of candour, disclosure, apology, and communication after surgical complications. Reviews indemnity and reporting obligations.
Human Factors and Team Response in Surgical Emergencies
-Discusses communication, leadership, and teamwork in emergencies. Promotes simulation, safety culture, and continuous improvement.
Closing Panel - When things go wrong
